SETTING UP
Automatic Installation
Double-click on the Understanding McLuhan Installer icon to automatically install the Understanding McLuhan program and the necessary extensions onto your computer. The installer will copy the program onto the root level of your hard drive or allow you to select/create a folder in which to copy the program.
Manual Installation
You can manually install the program and extensions by following the instructions below. These instructions assume a basic familiarity with Macintosh interface conventions. If you’re just getting started with your computer and find the operations described below confusing, please refer to the documentation that came with your computer.
To manually install this title, follow these steps:
1. Drag the Understanding McLuhan folder from the CD to your hard drive.
2. Open the System Requirements folder on the CD to show the extensions and fonts necessary or recommended for use with this title.
3. If you don’t already have these extensions installed, or are unsure, drag the appropriate icons one-by-one to your System Folder icon and drop them there. The Macintosh will guide you through the rest of the installation. If you install any extensions, restart your computer to make them active. If you have an older version of QuickTime already installed, you will need to manually delete this extension before installing the new version.
4. Open the "Put **contents** into prefs" folder and place the "Mcluhan Prefs" into your preferences folder. You can find the preferences folder in your system folder.
ABOUT MEMORY
If you have only 8 Mbytes of RAM installed, you'll need to make sure you
have enough memory available. Understanding McLuhan performs best if you have
at least 5500K of RAM (memory) free on your 68k machine before you launch it. Making this much
available can be difficult with certain models and system software
combinations. Here's how to tell whether you have enough RAM available:
1. Open the Memory control panel and make sure virtual memory is off. If
you're using some other form of memory extension, such as Connectix's RAM
Doubler™, turn it off. If you make changes, restart your Mac before
proceeding.
2. Quit all applications. (Print this document first if necessary.)
3. In the Finder, choose "About this Macintosh" from the Apple menu.
4. Note the "Largest Unused Block" figure. This is the amount of RAM you
have available. If it is more than 5500K, you're fine. If it is less than
5500K, however, you must take steps to trim the amount of memory your
system software is using. This will make more available for Understanding McLuhan To trim your system software's memory needs, you must temporarily
disable the extensions and control panels you don't need. If this isn't
something you're comfortable with, refer to your Macintosh documentation,
or seek the help of a knowledgeable friend.
If you have more than 8MBytes of installed RAM, you can allocate more memory to the program to improve its performance. To do this, follow the steps below.
NOTE: If you have a PowerMac , we strongly recommend that you increase the program's Preferred memory size to at least 6000K.
1. In the Finder, choose "About this Macintosh" from the Apple menu.
2. Note the "Largest Unused Block" figure. This is the amount of RAM you
have available. Subtract 500K (this has to be reserved for QuickTime to work) from
that figure. This is the amount of memory you can allocate to the program.
3. Open the Understanding McLuhan folder on your hard drive.
4. Click once on the Understanding McLuhan icon in the Understanding McLuhan folder so that
the icon is highlighted. (Do not double-click or you will launch the program.)
5. Under the File menu, choose Get Info. In the window that opens, you will see two
fields at the bottom right that say Minimum size and Preferred size. Click into the Preferred
size field and increase the amount of memory allocated to this program. Close the window
and launch the program.
NOTE: If you make changes to your system or have other programs running, the "Largest
Unused Block" figure may decrease. If you try to launch the program and get an "Out of Memory"
error, repeat the above steps to decrease the amount of memory allocated to the program.
